MARAKAME

The Christmas most of us carry in our heads comes with scarves, a fireplace and fogged-up windows. Christmas on the beach asks for a different wardrobe, and San Pancho makes it easy: sandals, a sunset over the Pacific to open the evening and a long table for the Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) dinner.

‍

This guide puts together a full Christmas week, December 21 to 26: what to do during the posadas, how to plan the dinner on the 24th, what Christmas morning looks like by the water, and why December is a good month to start looking for whales. At the end, a note for anyone already thinking about dates: Marakame's Christmas pre-sale is open through October 31.

‍

Why a tropical Christmas feels different

December in San Pancho brings sunny days and an ocean breeze, and the evenings can cool off, so a light jacket doesn't hurt. That changes the rhythm of everything. The day is planned around the hour the sun goes down; the toast can happen on a terrace or facing the water; and the morning of the 25th feels more like a Sunday at the beach than a gift-unwrapping marathon.

‍

If you're traveling from a city with a real winter, that contrast is half the plan. The other half is that a tropical Christmas doesn't ask you to give up what makes it Christmas: the familiar food and the company all come along, and only the setting changes. For sunset ideas, our guide to San Pancho beach is a good place to start.

Posadas on the beach: the nine nights before Nochebuena

Posadas, one of the best-loved Mexican Christmas traditions, run from December 16 to 24 and retrace Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem. In a Mexican home that means songs asking for lodging, a piñata, hot ponche (a fruit punch) and tamales. When you're traveling, it means Christmas has already started, even if you're far from home.

‍

If your stay overlaps those dates, ask the Marakame team which posadas or celebrations are happening in San Pancho that week, since they change from year to year. And if you'd rather host your own with family or friends, check first which spaces you can use: a small piñata and a few carols are enough to bring the tradition along.

‍

The Nochebuena dinner: what's on the table and how to plan it

The table on December 24 changes from family to family, but it often brings together romeritos (greens in mole), bacalao a la vizcaína (salt cod), tamales and hot fruit ponche. In San Pancho the challenge is practical: around the holidays, lodging and dinner are easier to sort out together and early. Reserve a table as soon as your dates are confirmed, ask about seasonal menus, and check opening hours for the 24th and 25th before counting on them.

‍

For ideas on where to eat, take a look at our guide to San Pancho's food scene. And if it's just the two of you, dinner can be as simple as you like: on a beach Christmas, nobody is timing the after-dinner conversation.

Christmas Day and after: the shoreline and the whales

The morning of the 25th is made for walking the shoreline with no schedule and leaving the day's plan blank. In the afternoon, Marakame's main pool or a stroll into town covers whatever's left.

‍

December also opens humpback whale season in Banderas Bay. According to the Marine Mammal Research Group (GRIMMA), the 2025-2026 season was scheduled to run from December 8, 2025 to March 23, 2026, and the dates are confirmed each year. If whale watching appeals to you, we have a guide to whale watching on the Riviera Nayarit.
